Eliana Blaine, Orcas Island, was a summer intern in chemistry in 2009, and returned as a chemistry lab technician (immunoassays and mass spectrometry) in summer 2010.  She is interested in strengthening local food systems, and is currently studying at Wellesley

Brook Brouwer, born and raised on Lopez Island, is majoring in biology at Colorado College.  Brook has studied influence of land-use change on soil nitrogen cycling at the Marine Biological Laboratories in Woods Hole, MA, and investigated floodplain nitrogen dynamics at the Flathead Lake Biological Station, MT.  His continuing work at Kwiaht involves the biogeochemistry of camas cultivation and anthropogenic fires.

Courtney Clark, Friday Harbor High School, was an after-school laboratory assistant in 2010, working on processing marine sediments and testing them for contaminants.

Marie Clifford, from neighboring Anacortes, WA, is studying biology and biochemistry at the University of Washington. She was one of Kwiaht’s interns in analytical chemistry in summer 2008.

Erin Crowell has her home on Waldron and interests in green building and urban design.  A graduate of Reed College, she is studying architecture in Los Angeles, and doing three-dimensional watershed modeling and analysis for Kwiaht.

Graham Ellis studied analytical chemistry and became an assistant in mass spectrometry at Kwiaht in his junior and senior years at Friday Harbor High School

Ian Finneran graduated from Lopez High School in 2007 and is now studying biology and chemistry at the New College of Florida in Sarasota.  He originally became interested in the life sciences after participating in the Kwiaht-supervised school science project on Lopez Hill, and interned with Kwiaht doing salmon genotyping in 2008.

Hannah Halliday was a Kwiaht intern and then research assistant in analytical chemistry in 2008.  From Shaw and Orcas Islands, Hannah recently completed her undergraduate degree in chemistry at Western Washington University.

Makenna Henricksen, a Lopez High School graduate pursuing environmental studies at Western Washington University, was a summer 2010 intern involved in studying wetland insects, and seining Fisherman Bay.

Steffan Iverson, a San Juan Islander, interned as a Kwiaht mass spectrometry technician in 2009 and 2010 while completing his chemistry studies at Evergreen State College.

Will Jacobson, a New Yorker studying geology at Carleton College, was a 2010 summer intern in entomology, working on biodiversity in farmed and undeveloped wetlands.

Sophie Kan, a French-Dutch biology student at the University of Nice Sophia-Antipolis, conducted surveys of Island Marble butterfly eggs and caterpillars for Kwiaht in summer 2008 and 2010 and investigated the genetics of the Pieridae.

Emily McLeod is studying entomology at Michigan State University, where she is also well known as a track-and-field star!  Emily spent summer 2010 collecting and studying wetland insects and crustaceans for Kwiaht.

Björn Ottosson, completed a special internship in analytical chemistry with Kwiaht in summer 2009 while a junior in chemistry at Rocky Mountain College.

Samantha Palace assisted with cutthroat genotyping in summer 2009 while continuing her studies in biology and genetics at the University of Massachusetts.

Jen Reeve, a Lopez student, was an analytical chemistry intern in summer 2009 and a lab assistant in Kwiaht’s genotyping facility in 2010.

Hannah Snow served as an after-school assistant in entomology while completing her studies at Friday Harbor High School in 2009.

Sophie Williams was a 2010 Kwiaht summer intern in wetland ecology after graduating from the University of Minnesota with training in geology and ecology, and an interest in sustainable food systems.

Tasha Wilson, a Lopez Islander, participated in our summer chemistry program in 2008, and provided field and laboratory support for Kwiaht studies of salmon, wetlands, and camas in 2009 after completing her BA at Whitman College in June 2009.
